5 Important Reasons to Watch ‘Nashville’ on ABC
ABC’s Nashville is my favorite new show on TV this year and here are just a few reasons why:
The Queen - If you watch Nashville for one reason and one reason only, it should be Connie Britton. Her Rayna Jaymes is edgier and slightly more volatile than Mrs. Coach but just as flawless and with every bit as much grace. She absolutely lights up every scene she’s in. In just two episodes she has me fully invested in her character and the journey that lies ahead. And who knew? The lady can SING!
The Brat - Quite a few people have told me they aren’t watching Nashville because they aren’t fans of Hayden Panettiere. I’ve never really gone one way or the other. I didn’t watch much of Heroes and I haven’t really seen her in anything else. But this role seems hand made for her. Her portrayal of Juliette Barnes, part ingenue, part slutty siren, is spot on. While she initially comes across as pure crossover country trouble, you can see in her eyes that something deeper lies within.
The Chemistry - Connie Britton’s Rayna Jaymes and Charles Esten’s Deacon Claybourne have incredible, palpable chemistry whether they’re shooting the breeze, singing a song or screaming at each other from across the room. It’s hard not to root for them despite pesky things likes husbands and history. They also have incredible chemistry with whomever they’re sharing the screen, making every interaction feel rich with unspoken tension. They aren’t the only ones though. Clare Bowen’s Scarlett and Sam Palladio’s Gunnar have almost as much sparkle and they’re just getting started.
The Drama - The intricacies with which the characters’ lives are interwoven are just part of what makes this show so special. The narrative is fraught with familial animosity, power struggles, shady politics, seduction, love and heartbreak. All of this in just 84 minutes of television.
The Music - I’ve never been a big fan of country music. In fact, I avoid it when I can. It was something that made me nervous when I decided I wanted to try this show. I needn’t have worried. There is some country music, yes. But it’s really good! There are also stunning acoustic songs, sung beautifully by the actors who put an incredible amount of emotion into their performances. Rayna & Deacon’s “No One Will Ever Love You,” gave me chills and moved me to tears with its intensity. The best part? Most of the songs are made available on iTunes after the show!
Haven’t started your love affair with Nashville yet? It’s not too late! New episodes air Wednesdays at 9pm EST on ABC.

What I’ll Be Watching: Wednesdays
I could not be more excited for Fall TV to return! In preparation, as I do every year, I have put together my schedule by day, time and channel just to make sure that both my Tivo and I will get the most out of the television viewing experience. This is my schedule for Wednesdays this fall (all times are Eastern):
8:00 PM on CW – Arrow: (New Show!) Probably the most anticipated new drama for me this season. And not just because of star Stephen Amell’s delicious abs. There will be action and mystery and with news of The Huntress, possibly even a love interest? My friend Erin will be recapping the show for OffColorTV.com and I can’t wait to read!
8:00 PM & 8:30 PM on NBC - Animal Practice & Guys with Kids: (New Shows!) Honestly, not two comedies I am hugely looking for to but the Olympic advertisements seemed to have worked for my husband. One thing these shows do have going for them is their casting. I love Justin Kirk (Weeds) and Zach Cregger (Friends with Benefits) and am a long time fan of the adorable Jesse Bradford (Bring it On). Hopefully they don’t totally suck! (AP Premieres 9/26 and GWK Premieres 9/12)
9:00 PM on ABC – Modern Family: This comedy didn’t have it’s best season last year but there is no way I’m giving up yet. It still makes me laugh out loud every week. And with a new baby on the way the fun can only increase. Right? (Premieres September 26th) (Please note that I will NOT be watching The Neighbors which airs directly after Modern Family)
9:00 PM on CW – Supernatural: (New Night!) DEAN!!!! You guys!! He is stuck in Purgatory and Cas seems to have left him and it’s dark and OMG what on earth is Sam doing?? I am so excited for season 8!!!!!!! In case you can’t tell, SPN is one of my all time favorites. Ever. I will never grow tired of the Winchesters. Looking forward to more laughs, more inside jokes and probably a lot of sobbing once this gem comes back to me. This year I will be recapping Supernatural for TheTelevixen.com! Please follow @thetelevixen on Twitter & come find me on the blog every week after the show! (Premieres October 3rd)
10:00 PM on ABC – Nashville: (New Show!) I really don’t know much about this country music themed drama except for the fact that Connie Britton is in it and I would follow Mrs. Coach anywhere. (Premieres October 10th)
10:00 PM on NBC – Chicago Fire: (New Show!) Two words: Taylor. Kinney. And he’ll be dirty and sweaty and doing heroic type things. Of course that’s not the only reason I’ll be watching. Just the most important one. (Premieres October 10th)
X-Factor on Fox: I had every intention of watching this show and only for Britney Spears but it doesn’t look like it’s going to work out. At least after the CW premieres it won’t. Sorry Britney but Winchesters always come first! (Premieres September 12th)

Parenthood: Spend Time with the Bravermans
Finding a television show on NBC that I can really care about is pretty rare. Which is probably why I never gave Parenthood, the television series, a fair shot when it first started. And I’m really sad that that happened. Especially because this show seems to have filled some of the Friday Night Lights sized whole left in my heart. Most likely due to the many shared cast members and production staff. That alone should have drawn me to it right away.
Over the last 4 days of marathoning the first 3 seasons, I’ve really gotten to know the family, the Braverman clan. I have bawled my eyes out and laughed my butt off. Both of which surprised me. For anyone who is used to a loud family, always talking over each other, always getting in each other’s business and always being the most important part of life, the Bravermans will make you feel right at home. For those who never had that, they will make you feel as if you always have.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a big fan of the 1989 movie of the same name, staring Steve Martin and I wasn’t sure how the series would stack up. It’s remarkable how well they’ve done, following those established character cues while also adding more depth, more heart and just the right amount of added drama. If you know the movie well, it will be easy to match each television character to its movie counterpart. And the casting of these counterparts is absolutely phenomenal. There is not a weak actor on the show, including the many familiar guest stars they have flowing in and out of the lives of the central family structure. Lauren Graham is flawless as is Mae Whitman who plays her daughter. Monica Potter and Erika Christensen are stunning, never failing to make me cry right along with them. Dax Shepard has blown away any expectations I ever had and the rest of the cast is equally recognizable and amazing. I have fallen in love with every single one of them, flaws and all.
People who know me, know that I am a big fan of over the top drama and crazy plot lines, even the ones that make me roll my eyes. The beauty of this show though is the subtly of the conflict and the realness of the story. Not one of the characters faces a problem that I myself or a loved one hasn’t faced. And it’s the family’s reactions to and resolutions of these conflicts that make them ever more endearing and heartwarming. No one is perfect. Bad things happen. But family always has your back.
The first 2 seasons of Parenthood are available on Netflix streaming and season 4 will be airing this fall on NBC. Time well spent.

Movie Review: Battleship
***THIS REVIEW IS SPOILER FREE!!!!!***
My GOD I loved this movie.
I want so much to be unbiased about it but that’s something very hard for me to do considering the content. I come from a Navy family. My cousin was a navigator on an F-14 Tomcat for 8 years (for those that don’t know jets, that’s the plane they fly in Top Gun). My husband was in the Navy when we met, a weapons control specialist serving on board an Atlantic fleet destroyer. My sister was a tech serving on board the USS Ronald Reagan when part of this movie was filmed on her ship. I love the Navy. And this movie was ALL NAVY.
The film, directed by Friday Night Lights creator Peter Berg, also featured the stunning (and very funny) Taylor Kitsch (my favorite Tim Riggins, also from Friday Night Lights) as a charming but troubled Navy lieutenant and his much more responsible brother played by Alexander Skarsgård of True Blood fame. So, if big boats with lots of guns aren’t your thing, these gorgeous guys might be.
In all honesty, the movie was so much more than I ever thought it could be. Big names aside, it also featured real US Army and Navy veterans and paid real homage to not only our brave men and women serving, but those of our allies as well. There were so many beautiful moments that gave tribute to the United States Navy, past and present. Moments that showed the real power and fight that these great people put into their work every single day on our behalf.
Also, there were explosions. GREAT ones. The action sequences and gun play were some of the best I’ve seen on film and some that my husband, as a Navy veteran, will talk about for years to come. It was intense and fun and constantly surprising. Jesse Plemons (another Friday Night Lights alum) and Brooklyn Decker provided a very entertaining supporting cast. I had initially worried about Rihanna as an actress and was concerned that she’d muck the entire thing but she proved to be a delightful addition to a really fun movie.
Other highlights: Fighter jets, an almost entirely classic and 90′s rock soundtrack including AC/DC and Stone Temple Pilots, Taylor Kitsch in a towel, super scary aliens AND MORE. Did I mention the gorgeous Navy ships yet? LOVE.
If you are looking for a good time at the theater this summer, a reason to throw your hands in the air and shout out loud, PLEASE go see this movie. You won’t regret it.

My Interview: Stephanie Pierce
My favorite writer this week is Stephanie Pierce (@sjopierce on Twitter) from OffColorTV.com. Stephanie has the BEST taste in TV. Like me, she is a huge fan of The Vampire Diaries, Tim Riggins, Ron Swanson and she is the main reason I am TOTALLY obsessed with MTV’s Awkward. Along with recaps for Suits and The Glades, she writes the best Happy Endings recaps in the history of humans. Stephanie will also be working with me and another friend on an upcoming, super fun project so stay tuned for that. In the mean time, read and learn why she is one of my favorite people.
You watch a LOT of TV because, like me, you are totally awesome. Of everything you’re watching right now, what is your favorite?
Are you kidding me with this question, Erin? Asking me what my favorite cookie is would have been easier to answer. It’s peanut butter by the way. Favorite show at the moment? Hmmm. Well, of course, I LOVE The Vampire Diaries but this season hasn’t exactly been my favorite (except for when Klaus drew Caroline a picture of a pony) and it would be a total cop out to say Happy Endings (but you all should seriously watch because it’s awesome). However, my favorite show on TV right now would have to be USA’s Fairly Legal. Why? Because it’s the one show that I watch purely for myself. Is it a show that’ll win all the awards? No, but it’s fun to watch with lots of lovable characters (and shirtless Michael Trucco) which is just what you need sometimes. Fairly Legal is my escape from the world and I can honestly say the most relaxing part of my week is Saturday morning when I’m lying in bed with my cup of coffee watching Fairly Legal on the DVR.
Anything you are wishing you could give up?
Glee. I hate that damn show so much but it’s like a car wreck you can’t look away from. There is nothing redeemable about the show with its preachy attitude and ridiculous storylines. I think the only reason I still tune in every week is to see how much further into the shitter they go. DAMN GLEE I WISH I KNEW HOW TO QUIT YOU! Also I really wish I could give up Weeds which pains me to say because I used to love that show SO HARD. After Nancy became queen of the slutty MILFs and Mexican drug cartels got involved, the show has gone downhill ever since. Plus I’ve never forgiven them for getting rid of Conrad. Silas, Andy, and Shane are the ONLY reason I still watch. They are perfect.
Finale time is around the corner. Is there a show you think will have the greatest cliff hanger? The saddest goodbye for the season?
Probably The Vampire Diaries because let’s be real, that show does cliff hangers the best. Fringe might give it a run for its money though. That show leaves me with more questions than answers every single week but that’s Abrams for you. Saddest goodbye will for sure be House & One Tree Hill. I haven’t really watched it this season as Cuddy leaving sort of ruined the dynamic of everything for me but I have loved House for so long that when its series finale airs it will be like losing friend. I mean it won’t compete with how I felt sad and all alone in this world when Buffy, Alias, or LOST went off the air but I’ll still probably shed a tear. (Side note- I promise I’m not crazy enough that I think my TV shows or their characters are real. I just get super attached to good story-telling.) And One Tree Hill, well my dad and I stared watching the show together back when it first aired and while I’ve tuned in every now and then, he’s stuck with it the whole way. It will definitely be like saying goodbye to that last connection of my teenage years.
There have been a lot of great new shows this season. Do you have a favorite?
I really loved Fairly Legal and Suits when the premiered at the beginning of the summer last year on USA but my true favorite of this year is Showtime’s Homeland without a doubt. I mean it has Claire fucking Danes as its lead, how could one not love it?! Honestly though, this show is amazing and its writing leaves you gasping for breath at the end of every episode. I really don’t know how to describe this show except for batshit crazy good. And oh my god, their finale has me dying for its return. Thankfully, Showtime just announced its return in September so if you can catch up on it before then I highly advise it.
Is there one that you were expecting to love but just don’t?
Ringer. As a HUGE Buffy fan I was expecting to fall head over heels for this show. Unfortunately, I fell right onto my ‘delete series recording’ button instead after the first episode. I just couldn’t get into it despite my SMG love and this is coming from a girl who owns ‘Simply Irresistible’ because of said love which might be one of the worst (read: BEST) movies ever.
I think we can agree that The Vampire Diaries has been amazeballs this season. Who is your stand out character for Season Three so far and why?
Klaus hands down. Here’s a character that when he was introduced I loved to hate him but I wasn’t overly attached whatsoever. If they would have killed Klaus off during the hybrid transformation in season two I would have been like, ‘Meh. So much for being un-killable.’ Enter season 3 Klaus and I cannot imagine the show without him. The writers have done a fantastic job growing this character from just the Big Bad into a character with depth and complexity that people can relate to on multiple levels. Basically Klaus went from this expendable chess piece into an absolute necessity for me. While Klaus is DEFINITELY villainous, I never want him to leave Mystic Fall if only because I want him and Caroline to run off to Europe where he spends his days drawing her pretty pictures. Gifting her pearl necklaces is optional. Seriously, the day they kill him off (and I know it well happen. I’m not delusional.) I will cry.
Favorite television character of all time:
Michelangelo from Ninja Turtles or Doogie Howser. Just kidding. It’s a tossup between Buffy Summers, Pacey Witter, Sydney Bristow, and Coach Eric Taylor. I will not choose so don’t even try to make me.
Favorite Television moment of all time:
I’m not sure I have a favorite FAVORITE but when Joey and Pacey are talking/reading to each other on True Love at the end of the season 4 premiere, “Coming Home”, is a moment that always stands out to me. I’ve had an obsession with sailboats ever since.
The show you wished would have never ended:
Most people would expect me to say Buffy but really it’d have to be LOST. There are no words to truly explain my love for this show. It was frustrating on so many levels but at the same time so rewarding. I like shows that make me think and question everything I know about it which is something LOST did better than anyone. You never thought for certain you had everything figured out. It still might be the only that left its viewers intentionally with so many questions left unanswered but that openness I think allowed fans to enhance the story in how they saw fit and you have to kind of respect that. I know a lot of people were upset with how it ended but I personally was okay with it. That final scene with a certain character’s eye closing- BEAUTIFUL. Oh and The Black Donnellys totally deserved a longer run than a 12 episode first season. I still think it’s one of the best hidden gems TV has created.
Marathon-ing TV shows you’ve never seen is all the rage these days. Any you are looking to start?
Vee from Vampire-Diaries.net loaned me The Good Wife season 1 and 2 a while back because of our mutual love of Matt Czuchry. I’m dying to start it up but it’s just been sitting there next to my TV waiting for me to pop it in once I find some free time in my crazy life. I’m hoping in the next week or so my life will have calmed down enough to so oogle Logan Huntzberger properly and to see what everyone is talking about.
If you could say one thing to all of the current TV watchers what would it be?
Have fun and don’t take it all so seriously. TV shows provide entertainment and escape from everyday problems through engaging stories which is why we love it. If you aren’t having fun thus missing out on good storytelling because you’re too worried about who’s going to end up with who or if a story isn’t going how you want it to then you’re doing it all wrong. Also don’t be afraid to try new shows even if you think you won’t like them because they might end up surprising you. I repeat HAVE FUN. I cannot stress this enough.
Ps- if you ask me all these questions next week, all my answers are likely to change.

My Life According to iTunes
This game was taught to me by my friend Lee from From My Side Of The Moon (great blog! Check it out!) We haven’t played in ages but it is ALWAYS a good time!
These are the rules: Grab a pen and paper and write down #’s 1 through 18. Open your iTunes to “Music” so your entire library is displayed. Click the Shuffle button. Click Play. Now WITHOUT SKIPPING ANY SONGS, write down the first 18 that play.
This is how mine turned out tonight:
Song #1: Opening Credits: “Fallback” by Sleeperstar
Not super familiar with this song but it’s really pretty and seems appropriate for opening credits. It does talk about “misdirection.”
Song #2: Waking Up: “You Got It” by NSYNC
Great tune for getting up and getting your day started!
Song #3: 1st Day of School: “The Youth” by MGMT
PERFECT.
Song #4: Falling In Love: “Resignation Studies” by The Silent League
This song is really kind of lovely and perfect for skipping hand in hand on a beautiful fall day. Even if it does talk about jealousy. Originally heard on my favorite episode of TVD: Let the Right One In.
Song #5: Fight Song: “Come Back” by Pearl Jam
Wow. Super powerful song and I can hear it played so perfectly behind and epic lover’s quarrel. Originally heard on Friday Night Lights.
Song #6: Breaking Up: “Lover to Lover” by Florence + The Machine
GREAT break up song!! All about moving from bed to bed. I can get behind that! (After a break up! Not now in real life!!)
Song #7: Prom: “I and Love and You” by The Avett Brothers
This is such a stunning song. I can picture the slow dance.
Song #8: Life: “He Won’t Go” by Adele
Pretty sure any Adele song is great as a life anthem.
Song #9: Mental Breakdown: “We Don’t Eat” by James Vincent McMorrow
Originally heard on TVD. First line: “If this is redemption, why do I bother at all.”
Song #10: Driving: “Gz and Hustlas” by Snoop Dogg
Apparently I am over my breakdown enough to jam out to some old school rap. Sweet.
Song #11: Flashback: “Lovefool” by The Cardigans
From Romeo & Juliet. LOVE this song. Very suitable for a flashback of my life.
Song #12: Getting Back Together: “Stop and Stare” by One Republic
OMG!! This is so great! EPIC reunion song! “Time for one last appeal.”
Song #13: Wedding: “Jonathan Low” by Vampire Weekend
This song is from Eclipse. Not really wedding appropriate. It’s about killing some guy I think?
Song #14: Birth of Child: “Satellite Heart” by Anya Maria
Another Twilight song! This one from New Moon. And a bit too sad for the birth of a child. Apparently my iPod has decided to stop playing fair.
Song #15: Final Battle: “Skylines and Turnstiles” by My Chemical Romance
Total head banging song! I think it totally works for a battle scene!!
Song #16: Death Scene: “Warning Sign” by Coldplay
Now I’m gonna cry.
Song #17: Funeral Scene: “Daft Punk is Playing At My House” by LCD Soundsystem
From The. O.C. How awesome would that be to have Daft Punk playing at your funeral?
Song #18: End credits: “The Only Exception” by Paramore
Super gorgeous song. Love it!
Give it a try friends and let me know how it goes!! I promise, it is a LOT of fun! Don’t forget to tell me how yours turns out!
My Interview: Vampire-Diaries.net
There is a well known truth within the fandom of The Vampire Diaries. If you want to know something about TVD there is only one place to go: Vampire-Diaries.net. They cover the latest and greatest from the books, the AMAZING show and the very talented cast. And the site runners are a very talented cast all in their own rights. Last year the extraordinary Red (@redcognito) and Vee (@dieslaughing) were joined by Abby (@AbbyGraham) and Kate (@katelinnea) and together the four of them rock it out on every level of class, creativity and care on a daily basis. Things on TVD are still in high season 3 gear but the V-D.net Crew were sweet enough to take time away from their busy posting lives to chat with me about TVD and TV in general. Be sure to follow them on twitter (@tvdnews) for all of the best TVD goodies.
As I mentioned, TVD season 3 is still racing ahead at full speed. Do you have a favorite moment of the season so far?
Vee: There have been so many moments so far his season. SO MANY. The phone call between Stefan and Elena in The Birthday, Stefan finding Elena in the closet in The End of the Affair, Damon and Stefan’s bar adventure in Ordinary People, etc. But if I had to go with the moment that took me completely off-guard and turned my TVD-loving world upside down? It would be Klaus telling Caroline what it could mean to live at the end of Our Town. I lost my ever-loving mind in those few minutes. I haven’t been that emotionally manipulated since Extreme Makeover: Home Edition went off the air.
Red: Anna and Pearl reuniting at the end of Ghost World. Call me a sentimental fool, but it was so satisfying to see someone get closure on this show. Anna was a fantastic character, driven by the single goal to free her mother for over a century, only to lose her again. It was a fitting send-off for her. They got their happy ending, and those are a rare commodity on this show.
Kate: It would have to be the speech Klaus gave Caroline about the reasons why she should live. It was really nice to finally see a vampire on this show interested in the world outside of Mystic Falls – and smart of Klaus to realize that beauty and art and travel would be the way to reach Caroline.
Abby: Elijah’s return. He didn’t just get out of the coffin, he came in like a boss with a handful of hybrid heart. Melt down those daggers, please! Elijah needs to stay forever.
How about characters? Is there one that is standing out for you, more than others?
V: You know, Paul Wesley has really been owning this season, but I have to give huge props to Joseph Morgan for adding depth to Klaus without compromising the fear factor. I wouldn’t get too attached to seeing this new side of Klaus because I firmly believe we’ll see the master manipulator back at work very, very soon. And cheers to Mr. Morgan for making me readily eat all facets of Klaus with a spoon.
R: Caroline. She’s having to deal with the fact she’s a vampire and has forever on her hands, and yet also has to deal with the very human reality of being a teenager growing up in a very confusing world. She somehow manages to be adorably vulnerable dealing with everything that gets thrown at her, while also being so brave and strong, facing each challenge as it comes with style and aplomb. She’s come a long way since season one, and has the potential to go so much further.
K: Klaus Klaus Klaus. As they’ve made him more complex this season, he has become one of my favorites. I hope we can keep him around for a long time.
A: I’m calling a tie between Klaus and Stefan, because a lot of what stands out to me for season 3, they’ve done together or in spite of each other. There’s no more “good guy/bad guy” stuff on TVD this season, everyone is both and all the shades are gray. I love it. I’ve had a blast watching Stefan go to town as a no-holds-barred badass, and I love seeing echoes of humanity that are surfacing in Klaus. Joseph Morgan and Paul Wesley have really shone.
There is a lot happening on this season of TVD. Is there a story line you are wanting to see more of? One that you are sick to death of?
V: I recently offended a lot of people with my Matt Donovan rant on Twitter but I maintain that Matt Donovan should be in the center of the supernatural happenings. The “but he’s our resident human!” excuse does not fly with me anymore. I’m sick of him “choosing” to be on the fringes; it’s time for him to be in the center of it all. Look, Matt Donovan: You live in Mystic Falls and you know better than most that you live in Crazy Town. So you either leave (if you want nothing to do with it) or you nut up and get in the fray. Yes, you’re human and therefore vulnerable, but your life is never going to be normal. You killed yourself to talk to your sister, for crying outloud. Get in there, dude. We’re three seasons in and you’re killing me with the “just a high school kid” routine. Before it was kind of charming but now it’s just pathetic and lame, and Matt SHOULD NOT BE LAME.
R: I… uh. Vee stole my feelings about Matt! That boy is just all the more awesome for the fact he’s completely human in all of this, and his kickassitude needs to be more recognised. Also, for the love of all that is holy, STOP DAGGERING ELIJAH! The guy is turning into a pincushion, and someone that cool should not have so many sharp suits ruined by pointy objects.
K: I always want to see more of what long-unconscious vampires go through to adapt when they’re suddenly confronted with the modern world, so with all the Originals back, I’m sad that the show didn’t explore this more. And the ghost storyline is one that I could just never really get into.
A: I’m ready to be done with the “parent” storylines. It’s Mystic Falls. Everybody has absent parents who make terrible choices, and those parents inevitably make things worse whenever they appear. Whether or not they eventually come around –like Carol Lockwood and Liz Forbes- they’re still terrible parents because the kids are constantly in mortal danger, turning into monsters and never going to class. That said, on a show like this the parents are pretty much obligated to be terrible. Otherwise the sacrifice rituals have to be over by curfew or next week’s show is everyone sitting in their rooms because they’re grounded, during which time all the vampires (who also had terrible parents) will be out murdering everybody in town. I understand wanting to add depth and history to the characters, but I’m ready to move on from the agonizing reunion stuff. I’d like to see more interaction between the Originals, the Salvatores, and Caroline. There’s a great stepladder of age, attitude and perspective going on there.
If TVD was canceled today, what is your dream ending?
V: My view on this is colored by the books but I believe the series should end with the death of Elena – by her making a terrible but necessary choice. The Vampire Diaries, to my mind, is ultimately about the bond between the Salvatore brothers and I believe Elena’s death is inevitable. And I don’t think it should have a fix, as it did in the book series. It sounds weird to say, but I would love nothing more than to be a sobbing, hysterical mess on my couch during the series finale. And that would do it for me in a satisfying way.
R: As a book fan, I have to go with Vee on this one. It would be the ultimate nod to book fans, utterly tragic, and utterly compelling television. I admit it, 12 year old me cried at the ending of The Fury, and I would love to be able to revisit that emotion.
K: Honestly, I’d love to see all the vampires move to Europe or something and let Elena, Matt, and the other humans go to college and have lives.
A: I think I’m with Kate on this one. Close the chapter, not the book. Send them to college, to Europe, or just leave them quietly in Mystic Falls. Whatever happens to Elena, I see no need for any kind of romantic ‘endgame’ with one Salvatore or the other. I realize it’s a very unpopular opinion, but I honestly think that a final choice and domestic bliss would be a great disservice to the story. I’d rather we just never know.
Other than The Vampire Diaries, what is the one show you never miss?
V: I recently devoured all of The Good Wife and am now current with what’s airing. It is an INSANELY GOOD show and manages to defy categorization in a lot of ways. You can’t quite describe it in a pithy soundbite, nor would you want to. Every single character is so well-drawn and unique and ESSENTIAL. Close second: White Collar, by far the breeziest, most stylish show I watch, I think. Sometimes you just want candy.
R: White Collar. I am far too invested in this show, and the whole relationship dynamic between Peter and Neal, and by extension El. Castle is another one. Because who doesn’t want to have Nathan Fillion on their screen every week?
K: Oh, way too many, but my favorites right now are The Good Wife, Castle, and White Collar.
A: Strange as it sounds, I don’t actually follow much TV. There are plenty of shows I like, but in terms of watching each episode as it airs during the season, The Vampire Diaries is my exception, not my rule. For everything else I inevitably end up missing episodes and have to catch up later. If I miss too many, I give up and wait until there’s a whole bunch and then watch them all one after another in a glorious, productivity-defying weekend. Revenge and Castle are at the top of that list right now.
There have been a lot of great new shows this season. Do you have a favorite?
V: I have two. First, Revenge, which has quickly embraced its own OTT soapiness and become true appointment TV. It’s the perfect cocktail of bitchy, badass, and batshit. My television practically frosts over when Madeleine Stowe and Emily VanCamp are onscreen, though Gabriel Mann (and his awkward yachting hipster wardrobe) really steals the show as Nolan. And Nick Weschler is so very, very pretty. Second – as anyone who follows my personal Twitter knows – is Game of Thrones, which I am UTTERLY OBSESSED with. I’m going into the new season now having read all of the books the series is based on and even though I know how things go down, it’s made me even more excited. So, warning to everyone who knows me: I’m going to be insufferable come April 1st. Aside from Vampire Diaries (obviously), I haven’t been this into a show since Lost.
R: The Finder. It’s so utterly quirky and amusing, and I kind of love having a mildly insane but lovable main character. It’s nice to not be able to predict the crazy turns. It’s also fantastic to not be bogged down with darkness and angst, which a lot of my other shows tend to have. I know for a fact that Game of Thrones will become an obsession, which is why (much to Vee’s frustration) I’ve been putting it off until I can get caught up and done with some other shows – I won’t have a life otherwise!
K: Revenge! It’s way better than I ever expected, and I’ve been thoroughly enjoying it. My one frustration is that Emily is bothering to think about Jack OR Daniel when Nolan is RIGHT THERE BEING AWESOME.
A: I’m anxiously waiting for The Borgias to return. Vee’s probably crying as I write this, but I just don’t care about its historical accuracy. It’s well written, beautifully shot, gorgeously costumed, and has a great cast. Honestly, Jeremy Irons could wear ugly pajamas, sit on a box and read the phone book aloud for an hour every week and I’d totally watch that show.
Is there one that you were expecting to love but just don’t?
V: Sadly, The Secret Circle - another L.J. Smith adaptation by Kevin Williamson. I genuinely loved the pilot and thought it had SO MUCH potential, but I gave up five episodes in. I have friends who say it’s gotten a lot better in recent episodes, but at this point I’ll wait for Season 1 to be over before giving it another go. If I bother to at all. Oh, and Ringer. What a colossal disappointment that show is.
R: Terra Nova. It started out so well, and then just failed to hold my interest. I hear that it perked up again towards the end of the season, but I’m failing to muster enthusiasm to give it another go.
K: Ringer. I tried. I really did. (Unlike everyone else, apparently, I’m rather liking The Secret Circle.)
A: The Secret Circle. I also loved the pilot and was really excited about it when it first came on. I’m not sure what doesn’t work for me, but it needs a little more punch to pull me in as an adult viewer. The time slot is also a big problem, The Vampire Diaries is a really tough act to follow. I think TSC might have held me better if it aired on a different night.
Favorite television character of all time:
V: This question will haunt me until the end of my days, but I’m going to settle on Lucas Buck from American Gothic. I’m not sure sinister has ever been so sexy. My crush on Gary Cole persists to this day because of that show and character.
R: Jack O’Neill, Stargate: SG-1. His snarky sense of humour gets me every time.
K: Josh Lyman of The West Wing.
A: Lucas Buck, American Gothic. (True story: Vee & I had no idea until this interview that we’re both totally obsessed with this show.)
Favorite Television moment of all time:
V: Probably the Six Feet Under series finale. I bawled through the last 10 minutes as if a loved one had died. And I’ll be damned if Sia’s “Breathe Me” isn’t a major cry-trigger for me entirely because of this finale. As far as I’m concerned, it was the most perfect final episode of a TV series, ever.
R: There are so many to choose from. One that sticks out is the Babylon 5 finale, Sleeping in Light, with John and Delenn’s goodbye as he heads off into space to die after his extra 20 years were up. Given all they’d been through together, it was just heartbreaking. TV moments that can actually make me cry are my favourite, because it’s a sign I’ve not succumbed to total cynicism quite yet.
K: The ending of Studio 60′s “The Focus Group.” It has dancing and a perfect song choice (“Will You Love Me Tomorrow?”), which are two of my favorite things to see on TV, and it manages to perfectly encapsulate the characters, relationships, and themes of the show in one short scene. Plus it has Bradley Whitford and Matt Perry rolling around in the sand together.
A: I can’t pick a favorite moment, there are too many. I can say that the final montage of the Friday Night Lights series finale were probably the most satisfying of all time. It was a perfect end to the journey that characters and audience had been on together. It left me feeling uplifted and happy, which was a nice change after the endless tears I cried during the course of that damn show.
The show you wished would have never ended:
V: There are many, MANY shows I wish hadn’t ended or that I believe ended too soon, but by far the most FRUSTRATING was Carnivale. The end of Season 2 (its last) was balls-out incredible and truly set up the ultimate arc of the show – but that’s it. That’s where it ended. Every time someone mentions that show, I want to weep for what might have been. And I think of it often because Tim DeKay, who played Jonesy, is now on White Collar. So every week, I clutch a throw pillow and softly moan, “Whyyyyyyyyyy.”
R: Stargate Universe. I am still bitter over the fact that SyFy cancelled a show with such good characterisation (Robert Carlyle was awesome as Rush, and I never could decide if I loved him or hated him) and interesting storylines in favour of Sanctuary, of all things.
K: Sports Night. The premise and format would have allowed it to go on indefinitely (unlike several of my favorite shows that have natural ending or turning points when a specific milestone is reached), and when it ended, virtually all of the relationships, romantic and otherwise, were left ambiguous in a way that I would have really liked to have seen explored.
A: American Gothic. It’s been 17 years and I should probably get over it, but I just can’t forgive CBS. That show was brilliant, creepy, perfectly cast and Gary Cole was fan-freaking-tastic in the role of Lucas Buck. Introduced today, the show would probably be a smash hit, but it was a few years too early and got axed before it really got a chance.
If you could say one thing to all of the current TV watchers what would it be?
V: HAVE FUN. I feel the need to say this on Twitter a lot, but it’s really true: Fandom – If you’re not having fun, you’re doing it wrong. So, SO wrong. Understand that you have no control over what unfolds on your screen, so either enjoy it or don’t and move on. That’s all.
R: Don’t get attached. The characters either get killed off, or the show gets cancelled. Either way, you’re left heartbroken and watching shows on repeat on DVD and lamenting that there were never enough episodes.
K: IT’S JUST TV. Seriously. It’s supposed to be entertainment. If a show itself or your interactions with other fans are causing you pain or stress, just turn it off. With all the very real problems in the world and in everyone’s lives, why create more for yourself?
A: Keep it classy. It must be a nightmare trying to make a show with people breathing down your neck all the time, trying to find everything out before it airs and then complaining about it as soon as it has. If we want great TV shows (or movies, or theater, or books) we have to give the people creating them time to do the job right. We also need to remember that they are people, with feelings, and treat them accordingly.

My Interview: Carina MacKenzie
Carina MacKenzie of Zap2It has one of the coolest jobs ever. Seriously. As a journalist for Zap2It.com she gets to visit the sets of all my favorite TV shows, interview all of my favorite stars and attend some very cool television events. Not only does she have an awesome job, she’s also a pretty awesome lady. I’ve chatted with Carina before about The Vampire Diaries and Friday Night Lights and we’ll be talking extensively about One Tree Hill after it ends in April but in the mean time, since I LOVE talking TV with her, I thought I’d ask some general questions and share the answers with you! Don’t forget to follow her on twitter (@cadlymack) for all the latest TV news!
Speaking of One Tree Hill, what do you think of its final season so far? Anything you especially love? Anything you especially hate?
I think that thus far, a lot of Season 9 for me has been about behind-the-scenes stuff. It was a big deal for me to be able to visit the set this year. One Tree Hill is the only show I watch today that I watched when I was in high school. There’s something kind of profound, for me personally, about having been 16 years old and connecting to Brooke Davis and relating to her, and then nine years later being able to say goodbye to her with Sophia – it’s hard to put into words properly, but it makes me proud of myself and makes me appreciate those heavy-handed OTH life lessons.
As far as the storylines go, I’ve been a little frustrated by the fact that Brooke seems to be setting herself up to be disappointed by her father yet again. I feel like she’s learned better than that, though I can also relate to the idea on a personal level. I also hate, hate, hate any hints that Dan is to be “redeemed.” Paul Johansson is a fantastic dude but that’s not reason enough to redeem Dan Scott. He’s the WORST.
What I love: The Julian baby-in-the-car storyline. It’s a brave story that I haven’t seen on TV before, and it absolutely tears my guts out because it’s so scary, but that’s what makes it feel real. Since the episode aired last week, I’ve thought about that final scene every day with a terrible, yuck feeling in my stomach. I’ve said it before – good TV doesn’t always make you feel GOOD, but it makes you feel SOMETHING, and that’s what this storyline is doing.
Like me and all of the coolest people, you watch a lot of television. Of everything you’re watching right now, what is your favorite?
This year I’m watching less TV than usual, actually, because I’m trying to read books and get more writing done. I think my TV schedule this season is the lightest it’s been since I was a freshman in college. Still, of the TV I do watch, the show I look forward to most each week is still Supernatural. Despite a lot of criticism, this is one of my absolute favorite seasons. I also adore Parenthood and every episode makes me cry. Of course, The Vampire Diaries is a favorite too. Covering a show can sometimes take the shine off it a little, particularly because a lot of fans don’t like the way I cover TVD, but I still love it.
Anything you are wishing you could give up?
I’ve cut most of the fat, honestly. I guess Glee is one that I don’t particularly love when I watch it. I haven’t forged an emotional connection to the characters because I think the writing is inconsistent. I still watch it every week, though, and I don’t have to for work, so that’s saying something.
There have been a lot of great new shows this season. Do you have a favorite?
Revenge. So much. As a Dawson’s Creek fan, I’ve got an affection for shows that recognize and embrace their schmaltz-factor instead of trying to be something they’re not. Revenge is just an hour of magic every week and they’re not afraid to go ultra-soapy – a mistress in a coma, stolen identities, all of it is just so unapologetically sudsy, and it works because of the talent involved. To use a frayed cliché, the writers and actors on that show “elevate the material” to a magical degree.
Is there one that you were expecting to love but just don’t?
I expected to love Grimm, but I didn’t make it past episode 3. It’s not that it was a bad show or that it didn’t deliver on its promises, it’s just that It ended up being exactly what was expected of it and little more. It’s a flu-show now… meaning, if I ever get the flu and have to stay in bed all weekend, I’ll catch up on Grimm, because I can probably drift in and out of sleep and follow the story.
I’ve been hearing a lot of news about pilots ordered for the next season of TV. Any that you are excited about or hoping to see?
I’m sure people will say I’m biased about this but I honestly think I’d say this regardless of friendships: Kevin Williamson’s untitled project is chilling and magnificent and riveting. The twists at the end are bone-against-bone jarring and to be frank, I’m surprised this isn’t on HBO or Showtime. I hope they get the casting right (I’ve got approximately 47,000 ideas, and all of them involve Misha Collins) and I think that if they do, they’ll have a near-perfect hour of television.
We are both huge fans of The Vampire Diaries. Who is your stand out character for season three so far and why?
Oh, Stefan, easily. He’s been completely turned on his head. The layers they’ve given him have been incredible to watch and his mercurial temperament makes the show so watchable and surprising. He’s no longer the reliable Stefan we came to love, and as Elena tries to accept that, the audience does, too. Not to mention, Paul Wesley hasn’t missed a breath. He’s perfect.
Favorite television character of all time:
Pacey Witter, no explanation needed.
Favorite Television moment of all time:
This is too hard, so I’m going to say three. First, Pacey watching Joey sleep after busting his ass all weekend to help her save the Potter B&B. I still remember watching that scene as an 8th grade kid for the first time, and getting goosebumps, and just thinking to myself, “Oh. TV can do that.” The second moment is Coach Taylor’s speech from the FNL pilot. “We will all fall.” I could get that tattooed somewhere right now. It set the tone for the entire series and the series delivered. And, finally, the moment from The O.C. pilot when Seth gets out of bed to hug Ryan and Ryan doesn’t know how to hug back. He has no clue where to put his hands. It’s powerful.
(For the record, when you say “of all time,” to me it means “after 1999, before today.” I wasn’t allowed to watch TV as a kid so I missed some of the good stuff.)
The show you wished would have never ended:
I think every show has an expiration date, but (to jump on the bandwagon) Veronica Mars was really the only show that ended before I was ready to say goodbye.
If you could say one thing to all of the current TV watchers what would it be?
Stop shipping and worrying about couples and just love your characters. If all that matters to you is who ends up with whom in the end, do yourself (and the public) a favor and turn off your television. Go outside. Find yourself a life. Come back for the series finale. You’ll get your answer, and you’ll have saved yourself six whole years of whining about fictional characters. They are fictional. Always remember they are fictional.
Also, be nice to the writers if the writers of your favorite show are so gracious as to give you an access point, like Twitter or a fanmail address. Remember this: Every tiny moment that came together to make you love a certain character or couple or story was strategically written to have that impact on you, so obviously, what the writers are doing is working for you on some level. Be nice. Be nice. Be nice.

My Interview: Melissa Miller
Some of you may not know this but one of my favorite things to do is to interview fellow TV writers/reviewers. I read so much about TV every day and through Twitter, I have become friendly with a great group of very gifted writers. Asking for exclusive interviews is one way I can confirm and show off the fact that I have the best taste in friends.
My favorite writer this week is Melissa Miller from Small Screen Scoop.com. Melissa is a fellow fan of The Vampire Diaries, One Tree Hill and The O.C. It must be said: she writes the best Sons of Anarchy recaps ever! She is also married to a man who wishes she watched fewer CW dramas. We have plans for a husband play date.
You are what I consider a true connoisseur of Television. Of everything you are watching right now, what is your favorite?
Oh, dear. I knew a question like this would be on here. And right off the bat! I apologize in advance to all the shows I love and I’m not naming. I still love you. Okay, I’m going to have to cheat a little. I’d say, as far as all-around quality goes, Sons of Anarchy and Justified are essentially tied. Each episode is somehow better than the last. Every actor is at their best no matter how little material they have in any given episode. They are both just solid shows. I am giddy with anticipation every single time I watch. Kurt Sutter and Graham Yost are brilliant masterminds behind two shows that screw with your head on a weekly basis and I love them for it. That being said, my favorite thing to watch is The Vampire Diaries. It’s a thrilling hour on a weekly basis and the addition of watching it “with” my Twitter buddies every week adds to the experience in a way that makes TV more fun than ever before.
What are you wishing you could give up?
First of all, I love how you phrased the question. It shows you are a true TV fanatic, because “giving up” a show isn’t as easy as just giving it up. Once you are invested, no matter how bad it gets, it seems impossible to delete that season pass, am I right? Anyway, one would be Desperate Housewives. I’ve watched from the start and it’s been getting on my nerves, but it’s ending, so… I can’t give it up now! Also, I haven’t been happy with House in awhile, and yet I’m drawn to it and can’t stop watching. I blame Jesse Spencer’s accent.
We are getting pretty close to February sweeps! Is there one show you are expecting the most from?
My initial response: The Vampire Diaries. However, they play every episode like a sweeps episode, so that seems too easy of an answer. I think the one I’m really looking for something HUGE to happen is Revenge. We already know the big reveal that catches us up to where the season started is slated to air in February so I want that episode, and frankly the ones that follow, to be massive. For a show that has only had 12 hours of programming so far, I’m almost shocked at how high my expectations are. But they are way up there. I want fireworks – literal fireworks, actually. It’s a party in the Hamptons thrown by Victoria Grayson on one of the soapiest night time soaps ever. If the figurative fireworks aren’t punctuated by literal fireworks, I’ll be disappointed.
Bonus answers: Chuck. The series finale airs during February sweeps. I expect it to be a perfect final hour. I need something to make me feel better about the show ending. I would also like a guarantee that I will see Zachary Levi will be on my TV again soon. Also, Supernatural because I always expect great things from that show. And not just because those Winchester Brothers are pretty pretty boys.
Is there a show you feel will disappoint?
Honestly, and I don’t want to sound like a really negative person, but I’m sure plenty of them will disappoint me. I find comedies have taken to just relying on stunt casting that feels forced for most of their sweeps episodes, so I’m sure that will be happening. Not included in that statement: Paul Rudd on Parks and Rec. That will be amazing. Beyond that, I fear that Gossip Girl will disappoint me most. I don’t have any specific reason beyond that I’ve been so frustrated with Blair this season and since sweeps will likely revolve around her, I fear disappointment. I hope I’m wrong though.
We are both rabid Vampire Diaries fans. Who is your stand out for Season Three so far and why?
While I think Nina is the stand out over all – I am convinced she has a twin sister that play Katherine – I think for season 3 specifically, I’ve got to give it to Paul Wesley. How flipping amazing is he as Ripper Stefan? I am in awe. I’m starting to think maybe someone else is playing this version of the character. He volleys back and forth between heartless killer to those subtle glimpses of the old sappy Stefan so quickly and seamlessly I almost get whiplash. In the best way possible, of course. He has transformed the character. My only complaint – Ripper Stefan doesn’t get quality time with his Vampire BFF Caroline. I want to see what Paul would do with that. Because so far this season it is clear he can do no wrong.
Favorite television character of all time:
Uh oh – another one where I’m starting to hyperventilate! There are some I want to name because they were deliciously evil or incredibly funny, or well, just hot. But I think I’m going to have to go with Lorelai Gilmore. I love Lorelai, first and foremost, because of the perfection of Lauren Graham. The fact that she was never acknowledged by any major award show for her performance of that character is, for me, one of the greatest TV tragedies. Lorelai is my favorite because she is perfect in her imperfections. She is a walking contradiction who made every person she came in contact with simultaneously infuriated with her and in love with her. I wanted her to be my mom and my best friend. Mostly, I just wanted to be her. Even while being frustrating beyond words I was always in love with that character.
Favorite Television moment of all time:
Well, here is the moment where my ooey gooey romantic center is revealed. My favorite television moment of all time is…. (insert drumroll sound effects)…. When Jordan Catalano held Angela Chase’s hand in the hallway on My So-Called Life. Yep. As a 14 year old girl, I could not possibly have thought of anything more romantic or moving then a guy like Jordan holding any girl’s hand in the hallway at school. Although, honestly, at 31, I’m still finding it difficult to think of anything more romantic or moving. But the simple sweetness of that moment is only half of why it’s my favorite television moment of all time. It also marked a turning point in my television watching. Before that show TV was something fun, interesting, whatever. I liked it. But I was never changed by it. My So-Called Life changed me. I felt more about those 19 episodes than I had about every other television show I’d watched in my life until that point. That moment in the hallway on that episode was like this explosion in my head. Suddenly I realized television can be so much more than just some silly thing to kill time. It can be art. It can speak to people. I was forever changed by that moment and that show.
The show you wished would have never ended:
After that last answer you’d think it would be My So-Called Life. But let’s face it, if that show had lasted they would have screwed it up. My show that I wish would have never ended: Friday Night Lights. I wanted to follow Coach and Tami Taylor until they both died together holding hands in an old age home. I wanted to see Julie and Matt get married and have a bunch of adorable kids because I think the Taylors would be amazing grandparents. I wanted Gracie Bell to grow up and be a beautiful smart girl who didn’t have people yell “Gracie Bell Taylor is a slut” at her. I wanted to see Tim’s house when it was finished. I wanted to see Becky and Luke live on a farm and have cute little kids/farmhands. I wanted to see Smash win a Super Bowl, get the disco ball trophy on Dancing With the Stars and then be a commentator on ESPN. I wanted to meet all the other kids whose lives Coach and Tami would change over the years. Basically, I just want to know what happens with every single character that was ever on the show for the rest of their lives. That show was perfection even at its worst. And I think if it had lasted 40 years that wouldn’t have changed. I still ache for it. And if you are reading this and haven’t seen an episode, go. Right now. Watch it. And so help me, if you say, “I don’t like football” I will find you. Y’all will love it. Clear Eyes. Full Hearts….
Is there a show you NEVER watch with your husband?:
Well, as you know, most CW shows would have to make that list. Although he does enjoy Supernatural and Nikita – the two that are a little more male friendly, I suppose. Especially Nikita. Maggie Q kicking butt in tight fitting clothing? Yeah, guys will like that. But the shows I tend to pause if he enters the room: Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill. I love them. I’m not ashamed. But of all the shows I watch that are easy to mock openly when seen out of context (or frankly even in context), those are probably it. By the way my husband would like to interject and say, “The O.C.” which I’m currently in the midst of a rewatch. To him I say, “Stay out of it, Nick Lachey.”
Is there a show you never watch WITHOUT your husband?:
There are actually quite a few. We make a point that if we both enjoy a show we will always watch it together. Awwww. Aren’t we adorable? But I’d say the ones he loves best, and therefore are the most important to watch together are: Justified, Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead. He doesn’t get as invested in shows as I do, but those three shows are a big deal for him. He loves them, and the more frustrating they get, the happier he is. It’s fun to watch him watch them.
If you could say one thing to all of the current TV watchers what would it be?
If you aren’t having fun, you’re doing it wrong. I love TV. A lot. I am extremely over-invested in the characters and their lives on all of my favorite shows. I appreciate shows that get lauded with accolades and shows that are the guiltiest of pleasures. I dissect them, and study them, and talk about them ad naseum. But here’s the kicker: I’m always having fun. If two characters get together that I don’t want to get together I get sad/annoyed/frustrated, but I don’t claim to hate the show and threaten the writers to fix it. I just hope for the best, and go with it. Fandom is an amazingly powerful– Nina Dobrev getting that People’s Choice Award is proof of that – and I have nothing but respect for people who love a show that much. But when the Fandom stops having fun watching their show, things have gone awry. Whether you watch just a couple shows on occasion, or obsess over dozens of them that you just possibly can’t miss – remember to enjoy yourself! It’s TV for goodness sake!
